Ancient Russian Icon depicting Saint Peter.
Egg tempera on wood panel.
Period: 1st half of the 18th century.
Excellent condition with no restorations or repainting.
Dimensions: cm. 58 x 26
Important and rare large Russian icon depicting Saint Peter.
The particularly elongated vertical shape allows for the figure of the Apostle to be depicted standing and in full figure.
The slender line of the body in an unnatural way is typical of Byzantine painting as is the head bowed to express devotion in the role of Servant of God.
The right hand indicates the Holy Scriptures and the Key to the Gates of Paradise, his unfailing attribute.
The Icon is of the highest level and stands out both for the period of its creation and for the pictorial quality.
It is a work for publication or museum exhibition and not a commercial icon.
The excellent conditions in relation to the period do not require restoration as the painted surface is very healthy without cracks or detachments.
We preferred to present it untouched without any restoration or repainting which in any case would only concern the small perimeter defects.
