Artist biography
Armando Testa (Turin, March 23, 1917 – Turin, March 20, 1992) was one of the greatest Italian advertisers, designers, animators and painters of the 20th century, also known for having founded the advertising agency Gruppo Armando Testa, still today among the first, in terms of turnover and activity, operating in Italy.
His creative activity detached from the field of advertising communication is already well documented from the end of the 1950s, as in the case of the screen prints which from 1958 will engage him until the early eighties. The subjects are often animals, where the taste for metamorphosis combines with that for word games, to the point of making the image the iconic equivalent of a stroke of wit. Among the various figures he created during his brilliant career, we cannot fail to mention the famous Caballero misterioso, a Mexican gunslinger, and his sweetheart Carmencita, both protagonists of a famous television carousel for the Turin coffee brand Lavazza.
