Antique pair of retour d'Egypte oil lamps, Rome circa 1810
Description:
Rare pair of elegant oil lamps, with green patinated bronze stems, depicting male figures in ancient Egyptian attire, holding the lights. From the floral elements on their heads, the fans extend, and around the necks of the two sculptures are silver oil cups; only on one lid can a contemporary assay mark of silver be noted. The pair of lamps were equipped with lampshades, now missing, and are still complete with accessories such as a small knife and candle snuffer hanging from chains attached to the rods. The details of the clothing and the ensemble are exquisite, even in the rear. The lamp falls within the "retour d'Egypte" taste in vogue in the early nineteenth century following the Napoleonic campaign in Egypt (1798-1801).
The marbles of the base are white statuary marble and Portoro marble.
Antique restoration to one of the two lamps, specifically to one forearm and the marble base.
