The putto has all the characteristics of a real child, and the reference to nature, represented by the flowers and the landscape, appears a pure pretext. In this painting, all the sensuality typical of the eighteenth century shines through, both in the soft, luminous rendering of the flesh tones, and in the languid posture of the limbs. Stern, Ludwing 1709-1777, was an excellent portraitist and painter of historical scenes. He was also a member of the Academy of St. Luke from 1756. Many of his works are located in the churches of Rome.
