The splendid Nativity with Adoration of the Magi offered, executed on panel in the second half of the sixteenth century, is articulated around the figures of the Child Jesus with Mary; behind them is Saint Joseph, while on the left are portrayed the three Magi. The oldest one, kneeling in adoration of the Child, has already placed the crown at the feet of the Virgin, while the second and third are waiting for their moment to honor the holy family, with their precious gifts still in hand.
The work falls within the artistic current that we now define as 'Veneto-Cretan'; it was precisely the Venetian domination that generated the Cretan Renaissance, making the meeting between the two artistic traditions profitable; Here, the Byzantine style incorporated Western iconographic elements, more precisely Venetian, Flemish, and Tuscan, giving rise to an interesting process of contamination fueled by the high demand for icons, especially from numerous Venetian merchants.
The innovation also started from the color, enameled according to the Byzantine taste but tonal and iridescent according to the lesson of Venice, reaching results of curious elegance, and the panel in question offers us an example worthy of interest.
Made according to a generally widespread module, as confirmed by similar compositions present in numerous collections (for example, look at the style of the panel with the same subject kept at the Faenza municipal art gallery - see photo), these are works produced for domestic devotion.
