SPLENDID EMILIAN WALNUT AND WALNUT ROOT FALL-FRONT DESK FROM THE 18TH CENTURY WITH EXQUISITE INLAYS - NEW ENTRY -
Description:
SPLENDID EMILIAN WALNUT AND WALNUT ROOT FALL-FRONT DESK FROM THE 18TH CENTURY WITH EXQUISITE INLAYS - NEW ENTRY This splendid fall-front desk or slant-front desk, datable to the mid-18th century (or the full Louis XV period), represents the best of Emilian noble furniture production of that period. The gently curved front accentuates its elegance, while the exquisite inlays contribute to increasing the refinement and preciousness of the piece. Which is made of solid walnut and walnut root. The modulated profile of the front is also echoed inside by the undulating molding of the shelf's chest of drawers. The structure of this rich piece clearly recalls influences from the nearby Veneto region. The Emilian character is here, however, emphasized by the robust structure (with the evident plinth), by the abundance of "raceme" inlays and by the walnut root in variegated shades in whose games the Emilian cabinetmakers competed. The slightly projecting lower frame which is ebonized suggests the geographical location of the furniture to be in northern Emilia. Externally it has three large drawers underlined by light frames that follow the wavy shape of the front. The sides are divided in half by a frame and feature raceme inlays like the front, squared in the upper part and enclosed within an oval in the lower part. Internally, a single central door and eight drawers (four on each side), all with raceme inlays like the front and the external surface of the fall-front desk which, inside, has boxwood threads. On the inner surface of the fall-front desk, a sliding central drawer conceals two larger secret compartments on both sides and two smaller ones always on both sides. Some nineteenth-century philological restorations. Furniture of extraordinary quality and executive refinement in excellent condition.
