ABOUT THE AUTHOR: He studied at the Copenhagen Academy, obtaining prestigious awards at a young age thanks to a series of small paintings of historical subjects and between 1833 and 1840 the royal family purchased four works for their collection, created with the aim of acquiring works by talented young artists. Despite the recognitions, he fails to obtain a scholarship to go abroad and so, encouraged by Bertel Thorvaldsen and Chritoffer w. Eckesberg, in 1841 he goes to Rome with his own means. With much sacrifice and living in hardship, he manages to spend four years between Rome and the neighboring countries in Lazio and one year in Munich. He was a prolific painter, who never abandoned his artistic personality, not even out of necessity, representing subjects and scenes with unusual settings and cuts for the time and avoiding falling into the ease of the prosaic even when addressing sacred subjects, a preponderant part of his pictorial activity. He was born on 18th October in Copenhagen and died there on July 1st. Raadsig was a painter of genre and figure scenes and landscapes who studied under Kunstakademi in Copenhagen. He is especially known for his depiction of coastal scenes and notably fisherfolk. Although he spent most of his career immersed in the artistic life of Denmark he also spent some time in Rome and Munich. His work is represented in the Aarhus with a piece entitled “Jens H. Ulfstand and the Abbot of Bekkeskov, in the National Museum of Copenhagen with 6 paintings and in Skagen with a piece called “In the Dunes of Old Skagen”.
