Neoclassical Lombard chest of drawers, area of Maggiolini
Description:
Splendid Lombard chest of drawers inlaid in various wood species (purple ebony, bois de rose, boxwood, cedar, rosewood, etc.). The inlays, of neoclassical design, depict two mythological birds and a medallion with references to ancient Greece on the top. The fritillary plant is depicted on the sides. On the front, with three drawers, in addition to various inlays of a floral nature (typical of Maggiolini), there are two large sphinxes. The central inlay, depicting an ancient vase and a patera, is found in the collection of drawings by Giuseppe Maggiolini (Maggiolini collection) at the Sforza Castle in Milan, under the name of Ciceri tablet. Maggiolini made a whole series of furnishings for Count Ciceri, including a desk (see attached photo) found in the private apartments of the mayor of Milan, in Palazzo Marino, where it had been forgotten. On the front of the desk, the aforementioned design is inlaid. From all this it can be deduced that the piece of furniture was built between 1795 and 1805, in the workshop of the great cabinetmaker, or by one of his collaborators who was aware of his designs and who may have started his own business (see Gaspare Bassani). Apart from some very small old restorations, the furniture is all original. Measurements h 93 x w 120 x d 57.5
