Pair of landscapes with figures
Description:
GIUSEPPE ZAIS
(Forno di Canale d'Agordo 1709 - Treviso 1784)
Landscape with a fortress
Landscape with a rocky outcrop
Pair of tempera paintings on paper, 41x56 cm
The Landscape with a rocky outcrop, which is a pendant to the Landscape with a fortress, identical in format, is published as an autograph by Zais by E. Martini (A new pictorial cycle by Giuseppe Zais, in Arte documento 11, 1997, pp. 205-207, fig. 10); the scholar emphasizes, in particular, how this work on paper should be related to a previously unpublished cycle of landscapes by the Belluno master, housed in the Palazzo Bonvicini in Venice and dating from between 1760 and 1765. The two delightful tempera paintings, rare in the artist's production, are interesting for the softly rosy tones of the clouds and the fresh execution of the figurines.
