[…] The painting, a masterpiece of the artist's maturity, represents the episode from the Old Testament, taken from the First Book of Samuel, in which the young shepherd David, after killing the terrifying Goliath with a simple slingshot, triumphantly enters Jerusalem carrying the giant's severed head on top of a sword. Castello, based on the biblical text («As they returned, when David was returning from killing the Philistine, the women came out from all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing to meet King Saul, accompanied by tambourines, with shouts of joy and with sistrums. The women sang as they danced, saying: “Saul has killed his thousands, and David his ten thousands”»), stages here an extraordinary baroque theatrical scene, all built on the diagonal lines of the large chariot and the figures of the procession, which converge in the center, directing the viewer's gaze… (see Giamblanco catalog 2016)
