WHITE CARRARA MARBLE SCULPTURE " MADONNA" - EXTRAORDINARY MASTERPIECE BY ANTONIO CANOVA
Description:
Autori: ANTONIO CANOVA AND BERTHEL THORVALDSEN
White Carrara marble high- and bas-relief sculpture, made by the most important master of the Neo-Classical age, ordered by an old Lombard princely family. Work of extraordinary quality level where the Canova can give to the figure, with first-class technique, dynamism, lightness and interior life. The richness and the levity of the drapery with the clothes that lies down on the body of the Virgin, the ability in using the pumice stone, smoothing marble up to let it look like living skin, the anatomic detail’s harmony and softness, work together to “bring out” the figure from the block of marble and instil life in it. The not extreme sizes give to the work a domestic look, even if it’s done by the hand of an artist who has contribute to make the history of sculpture in the II Millennium.
Museum masterpiece.
